Trees are hardy survivors on the streets of New York. Silent witnesses to all the changes that take place around them, they each project their individual personalities. As the sun sets in the evening and night blankets the city, their unique qualities are given new form. New York at night is alive with light - it illuminates the city's trees in strange and beautiful ways. Even where darkness seems to prevail, there are subtle sources of light - street lights, traffic lights, illumination from buildings and apartment windows and passing traffic, moonlight...and the light of the city itself reflected back to the streets by low lying clouds on overcast nights. All these varied and subtle forms of illumination play upon the city's trees at night, highlighting their shapes and textures, showing these familiar living beings in our midst in ways that I find to be beautiful, mysterious and spiritual.
